Alien Kind Foxes and Late Imperial Chinese Narrative
Alien Kind: Foxes and Late Imperial Chinese Narrative By Rania Huntington
2004 | 380 Pages | ISBN: 0674010949 | PDF | 84 MB
To discuss the supernatural in China is to talk of foxes and speak of ghosts. Ming and Qing China were well populated with foxes, shape-changing creatures who transgressed the boundaries of species, gender, and the metaphysical realm. In human form, foxes were both immoral succubi and good wives/good mothers, both tricksters and Confucian paragons. They were the most alien yet the most common of the strange creatures a human might encounter.Rania Huntington investigates a conception of one kind of alien and attempts to establish the boundaries of the human. As the most ambiguous alien in the late imperial Chinese imagination, the fox reveals which boundaries around the human and the ordinary were most frequently violated and, therefore, most jealously guarded. Each section of this book traces a particular boundary violated by the fox and examines how maneuvers across that boundary change over time: the narrative boundaries of genre and texts; domesticity and the outside world; chaos and order; the human and the non-human; class; gender; sexual relations; and the progression from animal to monster to transcendent. As middle creatures, foxes were morally ambivalent, endowed with superhuman but not quite divine powers; like humans, they occupied a middle space between the infernal and the celestial.

Agency, Loneliness, and the Female Protagonist in the Victorian Novel
Marie Hendry, "Agency, Loneliness, and the Female Protagonist in the Victorian Novel"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 1527527794 | PDF | pages: 118 | 4.0 mb
Many female Victorian-era heroines find themselves expressing a form of loneliness directly connected to their lack of agency. Loneliness is defined by a lack, and it is this that is prevalent to these characters discussion of the social structures that define their lives. As there is no way to easily discuss a lack of agency without stating that there is something missing from the root agency, loneliness is an expression of missing components. This work analyses this lack found in loneliness as a trope to discuss a social lack. Many novels are crucial to this discussion, and this book focuses on Charlotte Brontës Villette (1853), Anne Brontës Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), George Eliots The Mill on the Floss (1860), Thomas Hardys Tess of the dUrbervilles (1892), Florence Marryats The Blood of the Vampire (1897) and Ella Hepworth Dixons The Story of a Modern Woman (1894) to trace the evolution of the double use of lack in the nineteenth-century novel.

Aftershocks of the New Feminism and Film History
Patrice Petro, "Aftershocks of the New: Feminism and Film History"
English | 2002 | ISBN: 0813529956 | PDF | pages: 233 | 62.6 mb
The beginning of this century has brought with it a host of assumptions about the newness of our technologies, globalized economies, and transnational media practices. Our own time is a period marked by experiences of fragmentation, sensation, and shock. The essays here are joined by a common concern to chart another side to modernity-precisely after the shock of the new-when the new ceases to be shocking, and when the extraordinary and the sensational become linked to the boring and the everyday. Patrice Petro explores how the mechanisms of modernism, German cinema, and feminist film theory have evolved, and she discusses the directions in which they are headed.

Africanity Redefined
Ali Alamin Mazrui, Ricardo Rene Laremont, "Africanity Redefined"
English | 2002 | ISBN: 0865439931, 086543994X | PDF | pages: 234 | 28.1 mb
Africanity Redefined: Collected Essays of Ali A. Mazrui, Volume I is the first of three volumes of Ali A. Mazrui's most important essays. The eventual three-volume work will provide readers with a broad spectrum of Professor Mazrui's writings during his four decades as a scholar and public intellectual. This first volume redefines the meaning of Africanity across geographical spaces, time, and cultures. The resulting definition is dynamic. It forces us to reject neo-imperialist paradigms and ontologies of what it means to be African. By encouraging us to think about Africanity as an idea rather than as point of origin, the ideas contained in these essays force us to reposition ourselves in the debate of our place in global cultures and civilizations, and they prepare us to take a more active role in social and political affairs.

Koyal Verma, "African Clusters in India "
English | ISBN: 1032196602 | 2023 | 174 pages | PDF | 3 MB
African Clusters in India examines the discrimination and stereotypes faced by African migrants in India. It outlines the narratives of the migrants and demonstrates how their 'African identity' gets associated with drugs, prostitution, and cannibalism. The book brings to the fore how African migrants experience racial profiling based on a conflated African identity and how this identity gets generalized irrespective of the different nationalities and leads to social exclusion.
