Psychoanalysis and Homosexuality: A Contemporary Introduction
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032220988 | 173 Pages | PDF (True) | 6 MB
The authors explore a brief history of the developing social attitudes which influenced the evolution of psychoanalysis, from Freud's radical questioning of psychosexuality, to the later developments that assumed a moral high ground for heteronormativity and led to the diagnosis of other forms of sexual expression as perversions requiring treatment. The book elucidates contemporary developments in psychoanalytic thinking about sexuality from a post-heteronormative standpoint, including an examination of how heteronormative bias has relegated lived sexual experience to the sidelines. The book challenges this bias and introduces new ways of using psychoanalytic ideas as well as illustrating their relevance to clinical practice. Drawing on vignettes, the authors describe current challenges that clinicians face and discuss the dilemmas that these challenges present, both for qualified clinicians as well as those in training.

Psychoanalysis Under Nazi Occupation: The Origins, Impact and Influence of the Berlin Institute By Laura Sokolowsky
2021 | 266 Pages | ISBN: 1032105186 | PDF | 6 MB
Laura Sokolowsky's survey of psychoanalysis under Weimar and Nazism explores how the paradigm of a 'psychoanalysis for all' became untenable as the Nazis rose to power. Mainly discussing the evolution of the Berlin Institute during the period between Freud's creation of free psychoanalytic centres after the founding of the Weimar Republic and the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the book explores the ideal of making psychoanalysis available to the population of a shattered country after World War I, and charts how the Institute later came under Nazi control following the segregation and dismissal of Jewish colleagues in the late 1930s. The book shows how Freudian standards resisted the medicalisation of psychoanalysis for purposes of adaptation and normalisation, but also follows Freud's distinction between sacrifice (where you know what you have given up) and concession (an abandonment of position through compromise) to demonstrate how German psychoanalysts put themselves at the service of the fascist master, in the hope of obtaining official recognition and material rewards. Discussing the relations of psychoanalysis with politics and ethics, as well as the origin of the Lacanian movement as a response to the institutionalisation of psychoanalysis during the Nazi occupation, this book is fascinating reading for scholars and practitioners of psychoanalysis working today.

Provincializing Empire: Omi Merchants in the Japanese Transpacific Diaspora (Asia Pacific Modern, v. 18) by Jun Uchida
2023 | ISBN: 0520390113 | English | 378 pages | PDF | 39 MB
Provincializing Empire explores the global history of Japanese expansion through a regional lens. It rethinks the nation-centered geography and chronology of empire by uncovering the pivotal role of expeditionary merchants from Ōmi (present-day Shiga Prefecture) and their modern successors. Tracing their lives from the early modern era, and writing them into the global histories of empire, diaspora, and capitalism, Jun Uchida offers an innovative analysis of expansion through a story previously untold: how the nation's provincials built on their traditions to create a transpacific diaspora that stretched from Seoul to Vancouver, while helping shape the modern world of transoceanic exchange.
