The Winter that Won the War The Winter Encampment at Valley Forge, 1777-1778
Free Download The Winter that Won the War: The Winter Encampment at Valley Forge, 1777-1778 By Phillip S. Greenwalt
2021 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 1611214939 | EPUB | 11 MB
"An Army of skeletons appeared before our eyes naked, starved, sick and discouraged."Gouverneur Morris recorded these words in his report to the Continental Congress after a visit to the Continental Army encampment at Valley Forge. Sent as part of a fact-finding mission, Morris and his fellow congressmen arrived to conditions far worse than they had initially expected. After a campaigning season that saw the defeat at Brandywine, the loss of Philadelphia, the capital of the rebellious British North American colonies, and the reversal at Germantown, George Washington and his harried army marched into Valley Forge on December 19, 1777.What transpired in the next six months prior to the departure from the winter cantonment on June 19, 1778 was truly remarkable. The stoic Virginian, George Washington solidified his hold on the army and endured political intrigue, the quartermaster department was revived with new leadership from a former Rhode Island Quaker, and a German baron trained the army in the rudiments of being a soldier and military maneuvers.Valley Forge conjures up images of cold, desperation, and starvation. Yet Valley Forge also became the winter of transformation and improvement that set the Continental Army on the path to military victory and the fledgling nation on the path to independence. In The Winter that Won the War: The Winter Encampment at Valley Forge, 1777-1778, historian Phillip S. Greenwalt takes the reader on campaign in the year 1777 and through the winter encampment, detailing the various changes that took place within Valley Forge that ultimately led to the success of the American cause. Walk with the author through 1777 and into 1778 and see how these months truly were the winter that won the war.

The Voice of the Church at Prayer Reflections on Liturgy and Language
Free Download The Voice of the Church at Prayer: Reflections on Liturgy and Language By Uwe Michael Lang
2012 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 1586177206 | EPUB | 1 MB
Pope Benedict XVI has made the liturgy a central theme of his pontificate, and he has paid special attention to the vitally important role of language in prayer. This historical and theological study of the changing role of Latin in the Roman Catholic Church sheds light on some of the Holy Father's concerns and some of his recent decisions about the liturgy. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council allowed for extended use of the vernacular at Mass, but they maintained that Latin deserved pride of place in the Roman Rite. The outcome, however, was that modern translations of the prayers of the Mass replaced the Latin prayers. What was the reason for the Council's decision and why is there now a desire for greater use of Latin in Catholic worship? Why have some post-conciliar English translations of the prayers of the Mass been replaced? Fr. Lang answers these questions by first analyzing the nature of sacred language. He then traces the beginnings of Christian prayer to the Scriptures and the Greek spoken at the time of the apostles. Next he recounts the slow and gradual development of Latin into the sacred language of the Western Church and its continuing use throughout the Middle Ages. Finally, he addresses the rise of modern languages and the ongoing question of whether the participation of the laity at Mass is either helped or hindered by the use of Latin.

The Ultimate Green Veggie Spinach Recipes that Actually Taste Good!
Free Download The Ultimate Green Veggie: Spinach Recipes that Actually Taste Good! by Nancy Silverman

I used to wonder why my father loved spinach so much. After cooking a whole bag of fresh spinach, he was left with a one-person serving, if that. Then, I heard about Popeye and how the canned spinach he gobbled made him strong and powerful. It still took me many years to accept the taste of this green veggie and I needed a lot of unforeseen courage to begin eating it. Once I did, I never looked back or once again questioned my father's or Popeye's integrity. I knew in that moment that spinach would be a part of my diet and my life forever. I have also transmitted my love for these dark, leafy greens to my son. Starting at a young age, I made sure he knew about spinach and ate it in his meals, no matter what objections he threw my way.

The Stories They Tell Halakhic Anecdotes in the Babylonian Talmud
Free Download Judith Hauptman, "The Stories They Tell: Halakhic Anecdotes in the Babylonian Talmud "
English | ISBN: 1463244568 | 2022 | 326 pages | PDF | 3 MB
In this engaging book of commentary on the Talmud, the author upends the long-held theory of the immutability of halakhah, Jewish law. In her detailed analysis of over 80 short halakhic anecdotes in the Babylonian Talmud, the author shows that the Talmud itself promotes halakhic change. She leads the reader through one sugya (discussion unit) after another, accumulating evidence for her rather radical thesis. Along the way, she teases out details of what life was like 1500 years ago for women in their relationships with men and for students in their relationships with mentors. An eye-opening read by one of today's leading Talmud scholars.

The Spirit, the World and the Trinity Origen's and Augustine's Understanding of the Gospel of John
Free Download Giovanni Hermanin de Reichenfeld, "The Spirit, the World and the Trinity: Origen's and Augustine's Understanding of the Gospel of John "
English | ISBN: 250358991X | 2021 | 276 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In a renowned and controversial passage Origen writes: "Of the subsistence of the Holy Spirit, no-one could have even a suspicion, except those who profess a belief in Christ" (De Principiis, 1,3). But how come that ancient Christian authors elaborated a theology of the Holy Spirit? This innovative study tackles this question by analysing how the exegesis of the Gospel of John shaped the Trinitarian and soteriological agency of the Holy Spirit in the theologies of two of the most important Christian authors of all times: Origen and Augustine. In particular, the Johannine Father-Son-Spirit relation and the dichotomy between God and the world represent the foundation on which Origen and Augustine built their pneumatologies. At a closer look, one even realises that they both conceived the God-man relationship through a Johannine lens.
