Free Download Ockham's Nominalism: A Philosophical Introduction by Claude Panaccio
English | January 10, 2023 | ISBN: 0190078987 | True EPUB | 224 pages | 2 MB
William of Ockham (1287-1347) is oft considered the most important nominalist thinker of the Middle Ages. Nominalism, a metaphysical view that has had adherents throughout the history of Western philosophy, largely denies the extramental existence of universals and abstract objects by reducing them to linguistic or mental items. Philosopher Claude Panaccio views Ockham's genre of nominalism as consisting of three theses: that there are no universals in the external world, no relations, and no quantities considered as distinct entities.

Free Download Occidentalism: Literary Representations of the Maghrebi Experience of the East-West Encounter By Zahia Smail Salhi
2021 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 1474453228 | PDF | 2 MB
Evaluates the East-West encounter portrayed in Maghrebi literature from colonial times to the post-9/11 period. From the Back Cover'Ambitious and lucid, this book provides a comprehensive view of modern Algerian literature originating in the colonial period through the lens of "occidentalism". It is a valuable addition to the scholarship on the enduring, complex, and shifting relationship between coloniser and colonised in the production of literary knowledge.' Marnia Lazreg, City University of New York Explores the encounters between East and West in the Maghrebi literature in the pre-1945 period Maghrebi literature published in the first half of the twentieth century is a subject that seldom receives focused scholarly treatment. This is partly due to limited availability of the books, some of which were printed in as few as fifty copies. Zahia Smail Salhi tracked down these rare works and put them in the spotlight for the first time here. Through close textual analysis and in-depth engagement with religious and socio-political contexts, Smail Salhi determines whether these texts belong to a collective formation we may call 'Occidentalism'. In so doing, this book reintegrates the pre-1945 Maghrebi novels into the history and study of modern Arabic literature. Key features - Focuses on the work of early Algerian intelligentsia known as the Young Algerians and their insistent letters to the Occident; - Depicts the Maghrebi encounter with the Occident as a plea to extend Western civilization to all facts of the colonized society; - Engages with the work of early French feminists and its impact on the birth of Algerian feminism; - Includes readings of key texts by Chukri Khodja, Saad ben Ali, Djamila Débêche, Fadhma Amrouche, Mouloud Feraoun, Mohamed Dib, Ferhat Abbas and Albert Memmi, amongst many others. Zahia Smail Salhi is Chair of Modern Arabic Studies, University of Manchester, and Vice-President of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies. She is the author of Politics and Poetics in the Algerian Novel (1999).

Free Download Novel Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering 2018 by Emmanuel Stratakis
English | PDF | 2019 | 428 Pages | ISBN : 3038975435 | 117.61 MB
The concept of regenerating tissues, with properties and functions that mimic natural tissues, has attracted significant attention in recent years. It provides potential solutions for treating many diseases and other healthcare issues. To fully realize the potential of the approach, it is crucial to have a rational biomaterial design to create novel scaffolds, and other materials systems suitable for tissue engineering, repair and regeneration. Research advances on the topic include the design of new biomaterials and their composites, the scaffold fabrication via subtractive and additive manufacturing approaches, the development of implantable scaffolds for disease monitoring, diagnostics, and treatment, as well as the understanding of cells-biomaterial scaffolds interaction.

Free Download Daniel S. Chard, "Nixon's War at Home: The FBI, Leftist Guerrillas, and the Origins of Counterterrorism "
English | ISBN: 146966450X | 2021 | 384 pages | EPUB | 1148 KB
During the presidency of Richard Nixon, homegrown leftist guerrilla groups like the Weather Underground and the Black Liberation Army carried out hundreds of attacks in the United States. The FBI had a long history of infiltrating activist groups, but this type of clandestine action posed a unique challenge. Drawing on thousands of pages of declassified FBI documents, Daniel S. Chard shows how America's war with domestic guerrillas prompted a host of new policing measures as the FBI revived illegal spy techniques previously used against communists in the name of fighting terrorism. These efforts did little to stop the guerrillas-instead, they led to a bureaucratic struggle between the Nixon administration and the FBI that fueled the Watergate Scandal and brought down Nixon. Yet despite their internal conflicts, FBI and White House officials developed preemptive surveillance practices that would inform U.S. counterterrorism strategies into the twenty-first century, entrenching mass surveillance as a cornerstone of the national security state.
