Free Download Mediterranean Port Cities: Connectivity in Modern Times
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031323254 | 462 Pages | EPUB (True) | 55 MB
This book studies the change in Mediterranean port cities, from the nineteenth century when they flourished as a result of international economic relations and advances in transportation technology, through the twentieth century when the nation-states were at their prime time. This trajectory with two distinct parts belongs as a whole to what we call the modern times. Whereas in the first phase, Mediterranean port cities became hubs of spontaneous urban complexity and social diversity thanks to reciprocal relations that made them the places of cultural exchange, where people from different parts of the Mediterranean met one another, during the second, because of the interruption of such connectivities and major demographic changes the same cities experienced by way of massive migration, they became less and less unlike other cities with which they shared the same geography in general and the nation-state territory, in particular. Over the last few decades, with a new round of globalization, port cities increasingly find themselves facing new opportunities and connectivities, the realization of which would make them once again different, albeit in variegated ways and to degrees. Our narrative foregrounds contexts and connectivities with specific attention paid to mobility, fragility, and precarity. The purpose of this book is to highlight commonalities of and differences among the select Mediterranean port cities, with a focus on the role of social actors, changing economic relations and spatial characteristics and practices.

Free Download Howard Whitehouse, Roderick Robertson, Peter Dennis, "Mad Dogs With Guns: Wargaming in the Gangster Era"
English | 2017 | pages: 116 | ISBN: 1472819292 | PDF | 61,3 mb
In 1919, the US Government declared the production, distribution, and sale of alcohol illegal. America officially became a 'dry' land. That didn't stop people from drinking, however, and the rise of the 'speakeasy' offered huge new opportunities for organized crime. Soon, cities both large and small became battlegrounds as various crime syndicates vied for control of the underground alcohol trade. In Mad Dogs With Guns, players form their own small gangs of fedora-wearing, Tommy Gun-wielding gangsters and battle it out with their rivals. With numerous different gangs to choose from, including cops and G-men, a fully integrated campaign system, and rules for special situations such as car chases, the game offers a huge variety of tactical challenges. Bribe public officials, attend a gangland funeral, but always watch your back-there is always another gang waiting to poach your territory . . .

Free Download Fiona McHardy, James Robson, David Harvey, "Lost Dramas of Classical Athens: Greek Tragic Fragments"
English | 2005 | pages: 256 | ISBN: 0859897524 | PDF | 0,9 mb
This is the first substantial study of Greek tragedies known to us only from small fragmentary remnants that have survived. The book discusses a variety of Greek tragic fragments from all three of the famous Athenian tragedians: Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. The recent publication of translations of some of these fragments (Sophocles in the Loeb series, and Euripides in the Aris and Phillips series) means that the fragments are now more readily available than ever for study. The large number of extant fragments of ancient Greek tragedy can tell us enormous amounts about that genre and about the society which produced it. Papyrus finds over the last hundred years have drastically altered and supplemented our knowledge of ancient Greek tragedy; the book is at the cutting-edge of research in this field.

Free Download Leveling Crowds: Ethnonationalist Conflicts and Collective Violence in South Asia By Stanley Jeyaraja Tambiah
1996 | 395 Pages | ISBN: 0520206428 | PDF | 4 MB
"In recent years much has been written about what Tambiah calls 'the strange malformations' that have resulted at the end of the twentieth century from complex combinations of nationalism, ethnicity, demands for self-determination, and social groups defining each other in terms of religious identity. No one, however, has analyzed how these factors lead to the violence that has become the characteristic of our time as brilliantly as Tambiah has in this remarkable book. His insights as a social science into the political and cultural history of South Asia are informed by a passionate humanism that gives us a new understanding of the dark tragedies of our time."-Ainslie Embree, Professor Emeritus of History, Columbia University "Resolutely transgressing disciplinary and spatial boundaries, Tambiah offers a scholarly but accessible, a focused but wide-ranging analysis that places ethnicity on the borderlines of the old and the new, the past and the present, politics and culture...With uncanny skill, he turns the contemporary worry about ethnic politics and violence into a brilliant meditation on the history of nationalism, nation-states, and world-capitalism-in a word, modernity itself. No student of modernity, let alone ethnicity in South Asia and other regions, can afford to ignore this thoughtful inquiry into our modern history."-Gyan Prakash, Princeton University

Free Download Killing Time: The Autobiography of Paul Feyerabend By Paul Feyerabend
1995 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 0226245314 | PDF | 21 MB
Trained in physics and astronomy, Feyerabend was known as a philosopher of science. Feyerabend gave voice to a radically democratic "epistemological anarchism": he argued that there is not one way to knowledge, but many principled paths. Here, Feyerabend traces the trajectory that led him from an isolated, lower-middle-class childhood in Vienna to international academic success. He writes of his experience in the German army on the Russian front and he recalls his promising talent as an operatic tenor, his encounters with people from Martin Buber to Bertolt Brecht, love affairs, four marriages, and a career. The text sketches the people, ideas and conflicts of 60 years. Feyerabend writes of his complicated relationships with Karl Popper and Imre Lakatos, and his reactions to a growing reputation as the "worst enemy of science."

Free Download Journeys to the Ends of the Universe
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0367403234 | 210 Pages | PDF (True) | 85 MB
Journeys to the Ends of the Universe presents a tour through the universe from the big bang onward. The book explores the limits of knowledge where scientific fact overtakes and merges with the wilder speculations of science fiction. The beginnings of galaxies, stars, planets, and even life itself are related back to the raveled turmoil of the first few seconds and years of life in the cosmos. The journey continues past the ultimate fate of the solar system to probe the nature of supernovae. The future of galaxies, clusters of galaxies, super-clusters of clusters of galaxies, and so on leads toward the finale, where the author provides some bizarre musings of physicists and astronomers, suggesting possible destinies for the universe stretching its present age billions of times into the future.
