Free Download Hannah M. Bailey, "Architectural Representation in Medieval Textual and Material Culture "
English | ISBN: 1802700005 | 2023 | 212 pages | PDF | 8 MB
Exploring the work of writers, illuminators, and craftspeople, this volume demonstrates the pervasive nature of architecture as a category of medieval thought. The architectural remnants of the past―from castles and cathedrals to the lowliest village church―provide many people with their first point of contact with the medieval period and its culture. Such concrete survivals provide a direct link to both the material experience of medieval people and the ideological and imaginative worldview which framed their lives. The studies collected in this volume show how attention to architectural representation can contribute to our understanding of not only the history of architectural thought but also the history of art, the intersection between textual and material culture, and the medieval experience of space and place.

Free Download Archaeology of Performance: Theaters of Power, Community, and Politics By Takeshi Inomata (editor), Lawrence S. Coben (editor)
2006 | 348 Pages | ISBN: 0759108765 | PDF | 28 MB
Performances in the premodern communities shaped identities, created meanings, generated and maintained political control. But unlike other social scientists, archaeologists have not worked much with these concepts. Archaeology of Performance shows how the notions of theatricality and spectacle are as important economics and politics in understanding how ancient communities work. Without sacrificing conceptual rigor, the contributors draw on the wide-ranging literature on performance. Without sacrificing material evidence, they try to see how performance creates meaning and ideology. Drawing on evidence from societies large and small, Archaeology of Performance offers an important new ways of understanding ancient theaters of power.

Free Download Anti-Blanchard Macroeconomics: A Comparative Approach By Emiliano Brancaccio
2019 | 176 Pages | ISBN: 1788979931 | PDF | 4 MB
Olivier Blanchard, former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is author of one of the most important standard macroeconomics textbooks which is used throughout the world. Endorsed by Blanchard himself, Anti-Blanchard Macroeconomics critically analyses prevailing economic theory and policy in comparison with alternative approaches. This textbook is designed to stand alongside Blanchard's text, or indeed any other standard book on macroeconomics, but it can also be read independently. It provides undergraduate and advanced students with a critical view of the subject, and is also appropriate for scholars interested in a new way of analysing the debate between alternative schools of economic thought. Emiliano Brancaccio and Andrea Califano succinctly explore the relationship between theoretical models and economic policies, providing readers with examples and empirical exercises. The book highlights ways in which simple changes to the initial hypotheses of the dominant models can lead to alternative schemes that overturn the logical relationships and the policy prescriptions of standard macroeconomics. Key features: * It critically assesses the mainstream macroeconomic models * It overcomes the typical contradiction between the opportunity to offer students a preliminary mainstream education and the need to nurture their critical spirit * It helps students to understand that economics is not a discipline that changes in a smooth, linear manner but, on the contrary, represents a field of research that develops through intense theoretical debates, continual empirical testing and resultant disputes about economic policy * It critically analyses Blanchard's new approach to macroeconomics inspired by the 2008 global financial crisis.

Free Download Triin Laidoner, "Ancestor Worship and the Elite in Late Iron Age Scandinavia: A Grave Matter "
English | ISBN: 0367000636 | 2020 | 184 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Ancestor worship is often assumed by contemporary European audiences to be an outdated and primitive tradition with little relevance to our societies, past and present. This book questions that assumption and seeks to determine whether ancestor ideology was an integral part of religion in Viking Age and early medieval Scandinavia. The concept is examined from a broad socio-anthropological perspective, which is used to structure a set of case studies which analyse the cults of specific individuals in Old Norse literature. The situation of gods in Old Norse religion has been almost exclusively addressed in isolation from these socio-anthropological perspectives. The public gravemound cults of deceased rulers are discussed conventionally as cases of sacral kingship, and, more recently, religious ruler ideology; both are seen as having divine associations in Old Norse scholarship. Building on the anthropological framework, this study introduces the concept of 'superior ancestors', employed in social anthropology to denote a form of political ancestor worship used to regulate social structure deliberately. It suggests that Old Norse ruler ideology was based on conventional and widely recognised religious practices revolving around kinship and ancestors and that the gods were perceived as human ancestors belonging to elite families.
